Øystein Aarseth (22 March 1968 – 10 August 1993), better known by his pseudonym Euronymous, was a Norwegian guitarist, and a central figure in the early Norwegian black metal scene. He co-founded and led the band Mayhem and was also the owner of the record label Deathlike%20Silence%20Productions and record shop Helvete.

Euronymous was known for his extreme views, his promotion of black metal as a violent and satanic subculture, and his role in shaping the early aesthetic and ideology of the genre. He played a significant part in creating the Norwegian%20black%20metal%20scene.

His life was tragically cut short when he was murdered by Varg Vikernes (also known as Count%20Grishnackh) in 1993.
