Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was born on February 12, 1809, and grew up in Kentucky. Lincoln became a lawyer and later a state legislator in Illinois. He became president in 1861, and his presidency was dominated by the Civil War, which broke out a few weeks after his inauguration. Lincoln is often remembered for his Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all slaves held in Confederate territory were to be declared free. He was also known for many famous speeches, like the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, just days after the end of the Civil War. He is considered one of the greatest American presidents of all time.
