What is aelfweard?

Aelfweard, also known as Ælfweard, was an Anglo-Saxon prince who lived in the 10th century. He was the son of King Edward the Elder and his third wife, Eadgifu of Kent. Aelfweard was born around 904 and died in 924, only a few weeks after his father's death.

Aelfweard was the half-brother of Æthelstan, who would go on to become the first King of England. It is believed that Aelfweard was chosen as his father's successor and was crowned as co-king, but his reign was short-lived. He died unexpectedly at a young age, leading to Æthelstan becoming the sole ruler of the kingdom.

Not much is known about Aelfweard's brief reign, as his death occurred before he had a chance to make any significant impact on the kingdom. His burial place is unknown, and his existence is often overshadowed by the accomplishments of his more famous brother, Æthelstan.
