What is alveolitis?

Alveolitis, also known as dry socket, is a painful dental condition that occurs when the blood clot that normally fills the socket after a tooth is pulled is dislodged or dissolves too soon. This exposes the underlying nerves and bone, causing intense pain and discomfort. The condition typically affects the lower wisdom teeth and can appear several days after a tooth extraction. Symptoms of alveolitis include severe pain in the affected area, bad breath, foul taste, and visible bone in the socket. Treatment may involve cleaning the socket, placing medicated dressings, and prescribing pain medications. Good oral hygiene practices can help prevent alveolitis. People who smoke, use oral contraceptives, have poor dental hygiene, or have a history of the condition may be at higher risk.
