Anamniotes are a class of vertebrates that includes fish and amphibians that do not lay eggs with a protective amniotic membrane. Instead, they lay eggs that are surrounded by a jelly-like substance or are laid directly into water. Anamniotes are unable to reproduce on land, and their eggs do not have a hard shell to prevent dehydration, so they must lay them in moist environments like bodies of water. The lack of an amniotic membrane also means that anamniotes are unable to retain a fluid-filled secreted membrane around the embryo, making them more vulnerable to various environmental challenges. Examples of anamniotes include fish (such as sharks and rays) and amphibians (such as frogs, toads, and salamanders).
