Andy Townsend is a retired Irish professional football player who played as a midfielder. He was born on July 23, 1963, in Maidstone, Kent, England. He began his professional football career with Welling United and later made appearances for teams such as Southampton, Norwich City, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, and Chelsea.
Townsend's most successful stint was with Aston Villa, from 1993 to 1997, during which he was the team's captain and helped them win the League Cup in 1994. He also made 70 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team, playing in the 1994 and 2000 World Cups.
After retiring from football, Townsend became a television pundit, providing commentary on football games for various broadcasters such as ITV, BT Sport, and ESPN. He is also a co-commentator for EA Sports' FIFA video game series.
