Argentavis magnificens was one of the largest flying birds ever known to exist. It lived during the Late Miocene epoch, around 6 to 8 million years ago, in what is now Argentina.
Size: This colossal bird had an estimated wingspan of 5 to 6 meters (16 to 20 feet). Some estimates suggest even larger wingspans. Its weight is estimated to have been around 70-78 kg (154-172 lbs). Click this link for size comparisons: Size
Appearance: Fossil evidence indicates it likely resembled modern-day vultures or eagles, but on a vastly larger scale.
Habitat: Argentavis inhabited open grasslands and plains in South America, utilizing the strong winds and thermal updrafts. You can read about its habitat here: Habitat
Diet: Scientists believe Argentavis was primarily a scavenger, feeding on the carcasses of large mammals. However, some suggest it may have also been an opportunistic predator, taking smaller prey when available. Here is some information about its diet: Diet
Flight: Due to its immense size, Argentavis likely relied on soaring flight, utilizing thermals and wind currents to stay aloft. It is hypothesized that it took off by running into the wind or taking advantage of slopes. More information about its flight can be found here: Flight
Extinction: The reasons for the extinction of Argentavis are not fully understood, but it is likely related to changes in climate and habitat, as well as the decline of large mammal populations. You can read about this here: Extinction
