What is ascot?

An ascot is a type of neckwear.

  • It's a wide tie, usually made of silk or a similar luxurious fabric, that is folded or pleated and fastened with a tie pin.

  • It can be worn in a variety of styles, from casual to formal. The formal ascot is most often worn at weddings and is more commonly known as day cravat.

  • A more relaxed version, often called a scarf ascot is commonly worn with casual shirts.

  • Historically, ascots were popular among upper-class men and associated with horse racing events, such as the Royal Ascot, hence the name.
