What is ashkum?

Ashkum is a village located in the county of Iroquois, Illinois, United States. According to the 2020 census, the population of Ashkum is around 700. It is situated along Interstate 57 between Kankakee and Champaign.

Ashkum was initially incorporated in 1866 as the village of Ashkum Station, which referred to the railroad station located on the Chicago, Danville and Vincennes Railroad. The station was named after a nearby Native American village.

Today, Ashkum is a quiet rural community consisting of a few shops, small businesses, and restaurants. It is known for its historic architecture, including the Ashkum Township Public Library building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The village also has several parks and recreational areas where residents can enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing, and camping.
