Asklepios (or Asclepius) was a Greek god of medicine and healing. He was also known as the patron deity of doctors and healers. According to myth, he was the son of Apollo and a mortal woman, Coronis. When Coronis was unfaithful, Apollo killed her and saved the unborn Asklepios from her womb. He was then raised by the centaur Cheiron, who taught him the art of healing. Asklepios became so skilled that he was able to resurrect the dead, which angered Zeus, who feared that humans would become immortal. Zeus killed Asklepios with a thunderbolt, but he was later revered as a hero and became the center of healing cults. His staff, the caduceus, is a common symbol of medicine today.
