What is atabey?

Atabey is a Taino goddess who was revered by the indigenous people of the Caribbean islands, particularly in what is now Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. She was believed to be the Mother of Waters and the Earth, and was associated with fertility, protection, and abundance.

Atabey was often depicted as a beautiful woman with long flowing hair, holding a cornucopia or gourd filled with fruits and vegetables. She was also associated with the sacred waters of rivers, lakes, and springs. The Taino people believed that she was responsible for the creation of the earth and the sustenance of all living things.

Today, Atabey is still honored by some modern Taino practitioners and those interested in Caribbean indigenous spirituality. She is seen as a symbol of the interconnectedness of all living beings and the importance of respecting and caring for the natural world.
