What is aufhebungs?

Aufhebung is a German term that is extensively used in philosophy, particularly in Hegelian philosophy. The term embodies the idea of "sublation" - a dialectical process by which something is simultaneously preserved, negated, and transcended.

In its most basic sense, Aufhebung means to lift up, abolish, or negate something. However, due to its unique application in Hegelian philosophy, it takes on a deeper and more complex meaning. In the context of the dialectic, Aufhebung involves a threefold process of sublation: the initial aspect is that of negation, which is then followed by the aspect of preservation (or retention), finally culminating in transcendence.

In this process, something negative or limited is typically negated by the opposite force, which results in the combining and preservation of the two opposing sides in a new whole, with a resolution that transcends both of the previous opposing poles.

In this sense, Aufhebung represents a dialectical process of coming to terms with contradictions and oppositions, with the aim of achieving synthesis and transcendence. It can, therefore, be considered an integral part of the process of learning and human development, as well as a crucial aspect of the Hegelian philosophical system.
