What is balthasar?

Balthasar is a masculine given name that originated in ancient Semitic languages, including Assyrian and Aramaic. The name means "God protects the king" or "Baal protects the king." Balthasar is most commonly associated with the biblical story of the Magi, where he is one of the three wise men who bring gifts to the baby Jesus. However, the name was also used by several notable historical figures, such as the Renaissance composer Balthasar Neumann and the German theologian Balthasar Hubmaier. In modern times, the name Balthasar is rare but is still used in some regions, particularly in Central Europe.
