What is beaharnois?

Beauharnois is a small town located in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is situated on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, on the west side of the island of Montreal. The town has a population of approximately 12,000 people and covers an area of 71 square kilometers.

The town was named after Louis de Buade de Frontenac, Governor of New France, who was also called "Le Beauharnais". In the early 19th century, the construction of the Beauharnois Canal allowed for river transportation to connect the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. This made Beauharnois an important port for trade and commerce in the region.

Today, Beauharnois is known for its hydroelectric power plant, which was constructed in the early 1930s. The plant generates electricity using the Saint Lawrence River's water flow, and it is the largest hydropower generating station in Canada. The plant provides electricity to the province of Quebec and neighboring regions.

The town is also home to several parks and recreational areas, including Parc des Anciens Combattants and Parc St-Étienne. The area around the town is known for its agricultural production, particularly for its apples, strawberries, and corn. Beauharnois is a peaceful and picturesque place, perfect for those looking for a quiet retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
