Belostomatidae is a family of aquatic insects commonly known as giant water bugs or toe-biters. They are found in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams worldwide, except for Antarctica. Giant water bugs can grow up to 12 cm (4.7 in) in length and have a flattened brownish-black body with a broad head, short antennae, and powerful forelegs adapted for grabbing prey. They are carnivorous and feed on a wide variety of aquatic animals, including fish, tadpoles, and insects. Female giant water bugs lay their eggs on the surface of aquatic plants or stones, where they are guarded by the male until they hatch. Giant water bugs are considered a delicacy in some countries and are also used in traditional medicine.
