What is benandante?

Benandante is a term used to describe members of a folk tradition from the Friuli region of Italy during the 16th and 17th centuries. These individuals were believed to possess supernatural powers that allowed them to enter into a state of "ecstasy" or trance-like state in which they could change shape and travel to other realms.

The benandanti were seen as spiritual warriors who waged a battle against evil spirits to ensure a good harvest and protect their communities from sickness and other misfortunes. They were also believed to have the ability to heal people and animals and were highly respected in their communities.

However, when the Inquisition arrived in the region, the benandanti were accused of witchcraft and were often persecuted and executed. Despite this, the tradition continued in secret until it eventually died out in the 18th century.

Today, the benandante are remembered as a unique and fascinating part of Italian folklore and are sometimes compared to other mythological figures such as shapeshifters and werewolves.
