What is breem?

BREEM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is a sustainability assessment method used to masterplan projects, infrastructure and buildings. Originating in the UK in 1990, it is one of the most widely recognized and used green building rating systems globally. It is used to assess, rate, and certify the sustainability performance of buildings and infrastructure projects.

BREEM assesses projects across a range of environmental and sustainability categories, including:

Projects are awarded credits within each category, and the total number of credits determines the overall BREEM rating. The rating levels are:

  • Pass
  • Good
  • Very Good
  • Excellent
  • Outstanding

BREEM certification can enhance a building's market value, reduce operating costs, and demonstrate a commitment to environmental responsibility. It promotes sustainable design and construction practices, contributing to a more sustainable built environment.
