What is bremia?

Bremia is a genus of water mold that primarily infects plants and causes a disease known as downy mildew. The disease affects a wide variety of crops, including grapes, lettuce, cucumber, eggplant, and spinach. The pathogen is spread through water splashes, wind-blown spores, and seed transmission. The symptoms of downy mildew include yellowing of leaves, stunted growth, and reduced yield. Bremia species are known to be particularly devastating to crops, and effective management of the disease involves the use of fungicides, crop rotation, and resistant cultivars.
