What is brillig?

"Brillig" is a word created by Lewis Carroll, the author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." The word appears in the poem "Jabberwocky," which was first published in 1872. The poem tells a surreal and nonsensical story of a young hero's encounter with a fearsome monster called the Jabberwock. The word "brillig" appears in the opening line of the poem: "'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe." Despite its apparent lack of meaning, the word "brillig" has become a popular reference and is often used to evoke the nonsensical and imaginative world of Carroll's stories.
