What is bunburying?

Bunburying refers to the act of creating a fictional identity in order to avoid social obligations or responsibilities. The term was coined by author Oscar Wilde in his play "The Importance of Being Earnest," in which the main character, Jack Worthing, uses the fictional persona of Ernest to escape his dull country life and indulge in frivolous adventures in the city. Bunburying has since become a popular cultural reference for any form of intentional deception or escapism. However, it is generally viewed as unethical and potentially damaging to relationships and personal integrity.
