What is calymene?

Calymene is a genus of trilobites that lived during the Ordovician period, approximately 488 to 443 million years ago. They were found in what is now Europe, North America, and parts of Asia.

Calymene trilobites are characterized by their large, semicircular head shields called cephalons, which often have distinct bulges or nodes. They also have long, slender bodies and prominent spines along the edges of their exoskeletons.

These trilobites were likely bottom-dwellers, scavenging for food on the seafloor. They were estimated to have reached sizes of up to 10 centimeters in length.

Calymene trilobites are popular among fossil collectors due to their distinctive appearance and abundance in the fossil record. They are often found preserved in limestone or shale deposits.
