What is canalizo?

Canalizo was a Mexican politician and military leader who served as the President of Mexico from 1843 to 1844. He was born on July 31, 1795, in Mexico City, and began his military career in 1812, fighting against the Spanish in the Mexican War of Independence.

Canalizo served in various military and political positions during his career, including as the Minister of War and Navy, and as a senator in the Mexican congress. He became a controversial figure due to his authoritarian tendencies and his association with conservative political factions.

In 1843, Canalizo seized power in a coup d'état, ousting the liberal president Antonio López de Santa Anna. His administration was marked by repression, censorship, and the persecution of political opponents.

Canalizo was eventually overthrown in another coup in 1844 and fled into exile in the United States. He returned to Mexico in 1855 and served as a senator during the liberal government of Benito Juárez, but died shortly thereafter, on February 20, 1859.
