Caniapiscau is a vast unorganized territory located in northern Quebec, Canada. It covers an area of approximately 297,000 km², making it one of the largest territories in Quebec. The region is characterized by its abundant wildlife, untouched wilderness, and pristine lakes and rivers, making it an ideal destination for tourists who want to experience outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and camping.
Caniapiscau also encompasses the Caniapiscau Reservoir, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the world. It was created in the 1980s as part of the James Bay hydroelectric project and spans approximately 1,400 km² with an average depth of 200 meters. The reservoir has since become a popular destination for anglers, as it is home to a variety of fish species, including brook trout, arctic char, and lake trout.
The indigenous Innu people have lived in the Caniapiscau territory for thousands of years and continue to inhabit the region to this day. Despite its remote location, the territory has a small population of around 300 people, mostly made up of Innu residents and employees of the Hydro-Québec company.
Overall, Caniapiscau is a unique and beautiful region that offers visitors a chance to explore Canada's northern wilderness and learn about its rich indigenous history and culture.
