Tchaikovsky (anglicized version of his name Chaykovskiy) was a Russian composer from the Romantic era, born on May 7, 1840, and died on November 6, 1893. He was one of the most popular composers of his time and composed works in many genres but is most well-known for his ballet scores, particularly Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Sleeping Beauty. Tchaikovsky also composed six symphonies, concertos, chamber music, operas, and vocal music. His works are often characterized by his use of expressive melodies, lush harmonies, and dramatic contrasts. Tchaikovsky was openly gay and struggled with personal conflicts throughout his life, which is reflected in some of his works. He is considered one of the great composers of all time and his music continues to be widely performed and celebrated.
