What is chiasme?

Chiasme (also known as chiasmus) is a figure of speech that involves the repetition of two or more phrases in reverse or crosswise order. It is commonly used in literature, poetry, speeches, and everyday conversation to create emphasis, create balance and symmetry, and to add a touch of wit or humor. Chiasme often uses parallel structure to achieve its effect, and can be found in popular sayings and quotes such as "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" (John F. Kennedy). Additionally, it can also be a powerful tool to help communicate ideas or establish a sense of connection with an audience.
