What is cimbal?

Cimbal is a traditional percussion instrument commonly used in the music of Hungary, Romania, and the Balkans. It is a type of hammered dulcimer consisting of a trapezoidal wooden frame with metal strings stretched across it, which are struck with hammers or beaters to produce a bright, ringing sound. The cimbal is played either on a stand or by placing it on the player's lap, and can be played solo or as part of an ensemble. Variations of the cimbal can be found in other parts of the world, including the santur in the Middle East and the yangqin in China.
