What is cleave?

There are two different meanings for the word "cleave":

  1. To split or sever something, usually with a sharp tool or instrument. Example: The butcher cleaved the meat into pieces.

  2. To adhere closely or remain faithful to something, often used in the expression "cleave to". Example: I will cleave to my principles and not compromise my beliefs.

Both definitions come from old English, but the meanings have diverged over time. The word "cleave" is commonly used in literature and poetry, as it has a strong and evocative sound. It can also be used metaphorically to describe emotional or spiritual bonds.
