What is coetivy?

Coetivy is a small island situated in Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It is the southernmost of the Seychelles islands and has a land area of around 9.32 square kilometers. The island is surrounded by coral reefs and has a lagoon that is home to various marine species such as sea turtles, fish, and dolphins.

Coetivy was initially used as a plantation for coconut, breadfruit, and vanilla production and later converted into a prison. The prison, which was operational until 2018, held inmates serving time for various offenses. The Seychelles government plans to transform the island into a tourism destination with eco-friendly facilities.

Coetivy has an all-year-round tropical climate with temperatures ranging between 24 and 31 degrees Celsius. The island has a small airstrip that is served by domestic flights from Seychelles International Airport. Tourists visiting Coetivy can indulge in nature walks, bird watching, water sports, fishing, and diving in the pristine waters surrounding the island.
