What is comphet?

Comphet (Compulsory Heterosexuality) is a term used to describe the societal pressure and expectation placed on individuals to identify as heterosexual, regardless of their true sexual orientation. It suggests that society often assumes that heterosexuality is the norm and that individuals who do not conform to this norm are seen as deviant. This pressure can lead to individuals questioning their own sexual orientation and experiencing confusion or shame, particularly if they identify as LGBTQ+. The term was coined by Adrienne Rich in her essay "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence" published in 1980.
