What is countersteering?

Countersteering is a technique used by motorcyclists, cyclists, and some drivers to initiate a turn or change of direction by briefly steering in the opposite direction of the desired turn.

When a vehicle is moving at high speeds, such as on a motorcycle or bicycle, countersteering can help stabilize the vehicle and allow for quicker and more precise turns. By momentarily steering in the opposite direction, the rider or driver can lean the vehicle into the turn and initiate the desired change in direction.

While countersteering may feel counterintuitive to some, it is a crucial skill for safe and effective maneuvering at high speeds. Practicing countersteering can improve a rider's control and confidence on the road.
