What is cwtch?

Cwtch (pronounced "kutch") is a decentralized, multi-party secure messaging app built by the Status team. It emphasizes privacy, security, and freedom of expression through its design.

Key features and aspects of Cwtch include:

  • Decentralization: Cwtch operates on a peer-to-peer network, meaning there is no central server holding user data. This reduces the risk of data%20breaches and censorship.

  • Metadata Resistance: Cwtch is designed to minimize metadata leakage. Messages are end-to-end encrypted by default, and steps are taken to obscure the sender and receiver relationships.

  • Multi-Party Conversations: Cwtch supports group chats, which are also end-to-end encrypted and benefit from the same metadata protection features as one-on-one conversations. These can be created without a need for server to host the group.

  • Tor Integration: Cwtch has built-in support for Tor, allowing users to further anonymize their network connections and conceal their IP addresses. This is used to hide the server.

  • Onion Services: Groups and direct messages use onion%20services over Tor network.

  • No Central Authority: There is no central authority that can block, censor, or control access to Cwtch. Users retain full control over their data and communications.

  • Open Source: Cwtch is open%20source software, meaning the code is publicly available for review and auditing. This promotes transparency and trust.
