What is cyberloafing?

Cyberloafing, also known as internet loafing or digital loafing, refers to the act of browsing non-work-related websites or engaging in other non-work-related online activities while on the job. A survey conducted in 2020 by NordVPN Teams found that employees spend an average of 3 hours per day on non-work-related activities during work hours.

Some examples of cyberloafing activities are social media browsing, online shopping, watching videos, playing games, chatting with friends or colleagues, and reading news. While cyberloafing can be a way for employees to take a mental break during work, it can also lead to decreased productivity, increased distractions, and security risks for the company's network.

To prevent cyberloafing, companies can set strict internet usage policies, restrict access to certain websites, monitor employee internet activity, or use productivity tracking software. However, some argue that a better solution is to create a positive work environment that encourages focus, collaboration, and breaks.
