What is dasypogoninae?

Dasypogoninae is a subfamily of long-legged flies known as stilt-legged flies. They are mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Stilt-legged flies are known for their long and slender legs, which are adapted for walking on vegetation and other surfaces. They have elongated bodies that are usually black or brown in colour, and they range in size from 4 to 20 millimetres.

Stilt-legged flies are important predators of other insects, particularly small flies and mosquitoes. They are also known to feed on nectar and pollen from flowers. Some species are considered important pollinators of certain plants. The larvae of stilt-legged flies are usually found in moist soil or decaying vegetation, where they feed on other insects or organic matter.

Stilt-legged flies are commonly used in biological control programs to manage pest populations of flies and mosquitoes. They are considered beneficial insects because they do not cause any harm to humans or crops.

There are over 1,200 species of stilt-legged flies worldwide, with around 80 species belonging to the Dasypogoninae subfamily. Some common genera in this subfamily include Dasypogon, Microstylum, and Promachus.
