What is dermografi?

Dermografi (also spelled dermographism or dermatographism) is a medical condition characterized by the presence of exaggerated skin reactions to physical stimuli, such as touch, scratching, or rubbing. It is a type of urticaria (hives) that affects up to 5% of the population.

Symptoms of dermografi include raised, red, itchy welts or hives that appear on the skin shortly after physical contact. The welts may also be accompanied by a burning sensation or other discomfort. The rash typically lasts for a few minutes to a few hours before fading, and may reappear with additional physical stimuli.

The exact cause of dermografi is unknown, but it is believed to be related to an overactive immune system or histamine release. It may also be triggered by certain medications, infections, or underlying medical conditions.

Treatment for dermografi typically involves antihistamines and other allergy medications, as well as avoiding triggers such as tight clothing or harsh fabrics. In severe cases, immunosuppressants or other medications may be prescribed.
