What is detartration?

Detartration refers to the removal of tartar or dental calculus from teeth. Tartar is a hard, yellow or brown mineral deposit on the teeth caused by the buildup of plaque. It cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone and requires professional dental cleaning.

Detartration involves the use of specialized instruments like scalers and ultrasonic scalers to gently scrape away the buildup of tartar from the teeth. The process can be uncomfortable and may cause slight bleeding around the gums. However, regular detartration can help prevent gum disease and other dental problems.

It is recommended to undergo detartration at least once every six months, although some people may require more frequent cleaning based on their individual oral health needs. Maintaining good oral hygiene practices like regular brushing and flossing can also help prevent tartar buildup and reduce the need for detartration.
