What is dhamar?

Dhamar is a city in Yemen located in the south-central part of the country, about 100 km southeast of Sana'a, the capital city. It is the capital of the Dhamar Governorate. The city is situated at an elevation of 2,500 meters above sea level and has a population of approximately 200,000 people.

Historically, Dhamar was the capital of the Himyarite Kingdom and later became a significant center of Islamic culture during the medieval period. The city is known for its unique mud-brick architecture, traditional crafts, and ancient ruins, including the well-preserved 16th-century Great Mosque of Dhamar.

The economy of Dhamar is largely based on agriculture, with the main crops produced including coffee, qat (a stimulant plant), wheat, and barley. The city is also home to several educational institutions, including Dhamar University, which is one of the largest universities in Yemen. Despite being affected by the ongoing conflict in Yemen, Dhamar remains an important cultural and historical center of the country.
