What is dhokra?

Dhokra is a traditional Indian art form that dates back over 4,000 years. It is a non-ferrous metal casting technique that uses the lost wax casting method to create intricate and unique designs. Dhokra art is primarily practiced by tribal communities in India, particularly in the states of West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.

The process of making Dhokra art involves creating a clay model, covering it with wax and clay, and then creating a mold by heating and melting the wax. Molten metal is then poured into the mold to create the final metal sculpture. The finished products are often polished and embellished with intricate designs and patterns.

Dhokra art is known for its rustic and traditional aesthetic, often featuring tribal motifs, nature-inspired designs, and cultural elements. The art form is highly valued for its handcrafted and unique nature, with each piece being one-of-a-kind.

In recent years, Dhokra art has gained popularity both in India and internationally as a form of traditional and sustainable art. It is used to create a variety of products such as jewelry, home decor items, and sculptures. Dhokra art has also been recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
