What is distichiae?

Distichiae is a condition where there is an abnormal growth of eyelashes on the inner surface of the eyelid. These extra lashes can rub against the cornea, leading to discomfort, irritation, and even vision problems if left untreated.

Distichiae can occur in people of any age, but it is more common in older adults. It can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired, and can be caused by genetic factors or certain medical conditions.

Symptoms of distichiae include redness, tearing, foreign body sensation, and sensitivity to light. Treatment options include manual removal of the lashes, cryotherapy (freezing the lashes), or surgery to remove the affected gland. In some cases, artificial tears or anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to help alleviate symptoms.
