What is dnd?

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D or DnD) is a fantasy role-playing game originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. It was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR).

D&D differs from traditional wargames in that each player controls only one character. These characters form a group that typically embarks on adventures together. A central figure, known as the Dungeon Master (DM), acts as the game's organizer, narrator, referee, and plays the roles of various non-player characters (NPCs). The DM describes the environment, narrates the results of player actions, and controls the monsters and enemies the players encounter.

Players determine the actions of their characters. The outcome of these actions is often determined by dice rolls, using polyhedral dice with different numbers of sides (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20). Success or failure depends on rolling a high enough number to meet or exceed a target number set by the DM.

Over time, characters gain experience points, which allow them to level up and become more powerful. This progression is often represented by improved abilities, skills, and access to new spells or combat techniques.

D&D has a wide variety of settings, like the Forgotten Realms and Eberron, each with its own unique lore, history, and cultures. The game is also known for its elaborate system of rules that cover combat, magic, skills, and other aspects of gameplay. There are many different versions (or editions) of the game, with the current edition being 5th Edition (D&D 5e).
