dNTPs (deoxynucleoside triphosphates) are the building blocks of DNA. They are essential components for DNA replication, repair, and synthesis. There are four different types of dNTPs: dATP, dCTP, dGTP, and dTTP, each with a different nucleotide base (adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine, respectively). dNTPs exist in a triphosphate form, with three phosphate groups attached to the sugar molecule. During DNA synthesis, the high-energy phosphate bonds are broken to provide energy for the formation of new phosphodiester bonds between adjacent nucleotides. The balance and availability of dNTPs are critical to DNA replication, and any imbalance can lead to replication errors, mutations, and even cell death. Therefore, the regulation of dNTP pool size and composition is tightly controlled in cells.
