What is dombyra?

Dombyra is a traditional musical instrument from Kazakhstan. It belongs to the lute family and has two strings made of horsehair. The body of the dombyra is made of wood, covered with animal skin, and has a long neck. Its sound is characterized by a rich, deep tone and is often used in folk music.

The dombyra has a long history and is culturally significant in Kazakhstan. In the past, it was used to accompany epic and heroic songs, and it was also played during festive occasions such as weddings and celebrations. Today, it is still widely played and is considered a symbol of Kazakh culture.

There are different types of dombyra, including the zhetygen and the saukele. The zhetygen is a smaller, more portable version of the instrument, while the saukele is a larger, more ornate version that is often used in ceremonial settings.

In recent years, efforts have been made to promote the dombyra and preserve its tradition. It is now taught in schools and universities in Kazakhstan, and there are also competitions and festivals dedicated to the instrument.
