What is dotanuki?

Dotanuki refers to a type of Japanese sword that was commonly used by samurais during the feudal period in Japan. The word "Dotanuki" can be translated to mean "sword that can cut through a torso". Dotanukis were known for their sturdy construction and were primarily used as a weapon to break through the armor of an opponent.

These swords were typically larger and heavier compared to other types of swords and had a wider blade. The blade was sharpened on one side only, with a thick spine that ran into the tip. The handle was usually made of wood and covered with a piece of ray skin, with wrapping made of silk or cotton cord.

Dotanukis were made by skilled blacksmiths who used a special technique called "katana making". The process involved heating and folding steel repeatedly until the desired level of flexibility, sharpness, and strength was achieved. Today, many collectors and martial artists still value the historical significance and quality of Dotanukis.
