What is elderships?

Elderships are a type of leadership structure found in various religious groups, particularly in Presbyterian and Reformed churches. In an eldership, a group of mature and spiritually mature individuals are elected to oversee the church and its members. The elders are responsible for making decisions related to worship, doctrine, fellowship, and discipline. They are also tasked with caring for the spiritual needs of the congregation, visiting members in need, and providing guidance and counsel. Many elderships operate under a system of communion-covenant, where members agree to submit to the authority of the elders and hold them accountable. Elderships are often seen as a way to ensure accountability, protect against abuses of power, and maintain the unity and purity of the church.
