What is elide?

Elide is a word that means to omit or leave out a part of a word or sentence. It is also used to describe the act of joining two or more words together to form a new word by removing some of the letters or syllables. This technique is commonly used in poetry or literature to create a more concise or rhythmic effect. For example, the word "don't" is an elision of "do not." In linguistics, elision is studied as a phonological phenomenon, where certain sounds or syllables are dropped or reduced in the pronunciation of words. Elision can also occur in music, where notes or chords are omitted from a piece for creative or technical reasons.
