What is enten-eller?

Enten-eller is a Danish term which translates to "either/or" in English. It is a philosophical concept developed by Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, where he suggests that human beings are faced with constant choices between two mutually exclusive options. Enten-eller can be used to describe a situation where one must choose between two options which are diametrically opposed, and where it is impossible to have both. Kierkegaard's idea of enten-eller is meant to convey the idea that life is full of choices and that these choices are fundamental to human existence. He believed that these choices help shape our personality and define who we are. The concept has been widely discussed in philosophy, psychology, and literature, and has had a deep impact on existentialist thought.
