What is eoppa?

Eoppa (c. 650 – c. 694) was a king of Mercia, a Anglo-Saxon kingdom in central England, who reigned in the early 8th century. He was the son of King Pybba of Mercia and succeeded his uncle, King Wulfhere, in 675. Eoppa’s reign was short and relatively quiet; he is known for his conversion to Christianity and his patronage of the church. He had a daughter named Eafe, who married King Aethelred of Mercia, and a son named Eadbald, who succeeded him as king. Eoppa is mentioned in various Anglo-Saxon chronicles, including the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and some sources suggest that he was buried in Stowe church, Northamptonshire.
