What is essos?

Essos is a fictional continent in the world of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, and its adaptation in the television series Game of Thrones. It is located to the east of Westeros and is separated by the Narrow Sea. It is known for its diverse cultures, ranging from the sweltering deserts of the Red Waste to the affluent trading cities of Qarth. Some of the most powerful cities on Essos include the Free Cities, which include Braavos, Pentos, and Volantis. Other notable locations include the Dothraki Sea, the Slaver's Bay, and the ruins of Valyria.
