What is fisons?

Fisons was a British multinational company, based in Ipswich, England, that was a major producer of fertilizers, plant protection products, and also had interests in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. It was founded in 1843 by James Fison and his brother Edward, and grew rapidly during the 20th century through acquisition and expansion. Fisons was a major player in the global agricultural and horticultural markets, with a strong presence in Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific.

In the 1980s, Fisons encountered financial difficulties due to increased competition and a slowdown in demand for its products. In 1987, it was acquired by Rhone-Poulenc, a French chemicals company, and was subsequently merged with other companies to form Aventis CropScience. In 2002, Aventis CropScience was acquired by Bayer CropScience.

Today, Fisons is a legacy brand with a strong reputation among scientists and horticulturists, particularly for its pioneering work in soil science and plant nutrition. Many of its innovations, such as the use of peat as a soil conditioner and the development of controlled-release fertilizers, have become industry standards.
