What is gallocanta?

Gallocanta is a high-altitude lake located in the province of Zaragoza, Spain. It is situated in the comarca of Jiloca, near the town of Gallocanta. The lake is known for its wetlands and its importance as a stopover for migratory birds.

One of the main attractions of Gallocanta is the annual arrival and departure of thousands of common cranes. These birds cross the Mediterranean from northern Europe to reach their wintering grounds in Africa, and they rest and feed in the area around Gallocanta. The spectacle of the cranes filling the sky as they arrive and leave is a highlight for visitors.

Gallocanta is also home to a number of other species of birds, including geese, ducks, and raptors such as eagles and vultures. The wetlands around the lake are an important habitat for these species, and they are protected under Spanish and European law.

In addition to birdwatching, visitors to Gallocanta can enjoy hiking and cycling around the lake, taking in the scenic views of the surrounding countryside. The nearby town of Gallocanta offers accommodation and a range of local restaurants serving traditional Aragonese cuisine.
