What is geniohyoid?

The geniohyoid muscle is a small, fan-shaped muscle located in the neck. It originates from the mental spine of the mandible (chin bone) and inserts on the body of the hyoid bone.

The main function of the geniohyoid muscle is to elevate and stabilize the hyoid bone during swallowing and speaking. It also plays a role in controlling the position of the tongue and larynx.

The geniohyoid muscle is innervated by the first cervical nerve (C1) and is considered one of the suprahyoid muscles, along with the digastric, stylohyoid, and mylohyoid muscles.

Weakness or injury to the geniohyoid muscle can result in difficulties with swallowing, speech, and tongue movement. Strengthening exercises and proper rehabilitation can help improve the function of the geniohyoid muscle.
